A note for those who want to change the system from within

If you want to be able to affect the direction of the system from within, you have to be absolutely amoral. Read The Prince. Memorize it. That’s your only ethical code now. Anything else is a liability.

Honesty is your enemy. Become a pathological liar as earlier as possible. The truth will never set you free. Always tell power what it wants to hear. You will be rewarded for your deceit.

If you are deceptive and obsequious enough, you may find yourself in a position with enough actionable political power to affect real political outcomes. If you can finagle your way into this position and not hate yourself, so much the better.

But just remember: the establishment is full of people who entered it to do good. Institutions have a metaphysical personality and character. They will bring incredible force to bear to bend you to their will and they are better at inveigling and obfuscating than you ever will be. No matter how much you may feel you are in control of the situation, you never will be. Look at that mild mannered community organizer from Chicago. You think he wants to be blowing up Afghani children? Anyone who says he does is someone not worth listening to. Of course he doesn’t. He just doesn’t have any choice.

And that’s the tragedy of trying to work from within the system.
